The farmland in Lai Chi Wo is co-managed by the Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme project team and local community farmers through management agreement. Before joining the project, community farmers were required to submit a proposal and commit to the project's nature-friendly farming principles. They must also comply with the project's production and land management guidelines of the project, and participate in the regular farmers meetings to promote sustainable agriculture collaboratively. Currently, different farmer groups are responsible for different zones of the farmland. Visitors are welcome to explore the fruits grown with their hearts.
7 Farmland Rehabilitation
Signage Content
Farmland provides food for villagers and serves as habitats for diverse wild animals and plants. Since 2021, the project organisation of the Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme has rehabilitated farmland using Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to grow crops like radish, turmeric and coffee, while also enhancing biodiversity. Visitors can explore Lai Chi Wo's seasonal produce and unique farm products at regular farmers' markets and Harvest Fun Fair held in the village.
Regarding the name 'Lai Chi Wo', 'Wo' in Hakka refers to a flat, shovel-shaped valley. The villagers mention that there are still a few lychee trees hidden in the village. Can you find them?
Besides the Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme projects, villagers and the university have jointly planted approximately 700 coffee trees in Lai Chi Wo, all cultivated through organic and 'agroforestry' methods. The coffee produced here has become a signature speciality of Lai Chi Wo, inviting you to explore its distinctive flavours throughout the village!
With joint efforts from the project organisation and community farmers, a farmers' market is regularly held at the Lai Chi Wo Square to promote Lai Chi Wo's locally grown and processed agricultural products. The market often features farming experiences and family-friendly activities, making it an ideal opportunity to explore Lai Chi Wo's agricultural practices, culture, and natural ecology. For specific dates of the farmers' market, please refer to announcements by the project organisation.
Lai Chi Wo boasts a rich tapestry of ecological resources, including mangroves, rice paddies, and lotus ponds - diverse habitats that support an abundance of plant and animal life. Conserved species include Orange-tailed Midget (damselfly), Plain Hedge Blue (butterfly), Chinese Bullfrog (frog), and Rice Fish (fish), collectively known as the 'Four Treasures of Lai Chi Wo'. These species reflect the village's remarkable biodiversity and ecological value.
