Hong Kong Got Fishpond - Eco-fishpond Management Agreement Scheme (2021-2023) (2023-2025)
Project Description
The objective of the project is to conserve fishponds in Deep Bay outside the Ramsar site, to ensure the integrity of the wetlands in Deep Bay and to conserve the ecological value of fishponds as a whole. Being complementary to the "Fishpond Conservation Scheme in Ramsar Site", this project mainly aims to provide foraging habitats for waterbirds by carrying out water drain down operation at vast areas of fishponds. At the same time, various educational and promotional activities are organised to promote wetland conservation and local pond fish farming, and raise public awareness of the overall fishpond conservation in Deep Bay.

Project Update
(25/2/2024) The 9th New Territories Fishpond Carnival 2024 was held on 25 February 2024 at Tai Sang Wai Village in Yuen Long. This carnival was held for the first time in five years after the epidemic. More than 400 citizens and representatives from all walks of life gathered to participate, personally supporting local fishpond operators and fish pond conservation, and praising fishpond operators for perseverance in their work with the spirit of a craftsman.
Project Outcome
About 250 hectares of fishponds are engaged in water drain-down and pond bund profiling to provide feeding and resting space for waterbirds.
Through regular ecological surveys, the project is able to monitor the condition of the fishponds and confirm that drain-down and profiling measures can effectively increase the number of waterbird individuals utilising the fishpond habitat.
Through conducting questionnaire surveys, the project confirms that it has successfully promoted the cultural and ecological value of local fishponds to the public through collaboration with fishpond operators and the community.

The Hong Kong Bird Watching Society held the final judging for the first "Floating Duck and Wild Duck Model Design Competition" (Secondary School Division) on February 4, 2023 in the Northwest New Territories fishponds of Hong Kong. Let's revisit the exciting highlights of that day.
The fish farming industry in the northwest New Territories has a history of nearly 100 years, with the relevant knowledge and skills passed down through generations of fishpond operators. While the fishpond operators are working hard for the local fishing industry and for the benefit of the community, the traditional pond fish culture industry has also contributed much to waterbird conservation. What great significance lies behind the fish dish on the table? We hope everyone can savour the stories in this short film and feel the connection between fish, people, and birds.
