Project Description

The project works closely with fishpond operators in the Deep Bay area to carry out the management of the water drain down of the fishponds to provide feeding and habitat space for waterbirds. The project also aims to study and explore the ecological value of abandoned fishponds; and to promote and conserve the cultural and ecological values of local fishponds through collaboration with fishpond operators and the community, so as to achieve the goal of "harmony between people and nature".

Management Measure

(a) Habitat conservation measures:
- Engage fishpond operators to conduct drain-down and profiling, and regular site-inspection to monitor work progress and fishpond conditions
- Maintain and enhance a pond that was converted from two inactive fishponds with the design intent to create habitats for waterfowl
- Engage fishpond operators to search and protect waterbird nest in fishponds

(b) Regular ecological monitoring surveys of birds

(c) Public engagement activities:
- Examples include tours for school, talks, exhibitions and annual fishpond carnival event, etc.

Project Update

(25/2/2024) The 9th New Territories Fishpond Carnival 2024 was held on 25 February 2024 at Tai Sang Wai Village in Yuen Long. This year's carnival was held for the first time in five years after the epidemic. More than 400 citizens and representatives from all walks of life gathered to participate, personally supporting local fishpond operators and fish pond conservation, and praising fishpond operators for their perseverance in their work with the spirit of a craftsman.

Project Outcome

About 260 hectares of fishponds are engaged in water drain down and pond bund profiling to provide feeding and resting space for waterbirds.

Research and explore new habitat management measures to enhance the ecological value of inactive ponds.

To understand the positive benefits of the measures on use of ponds by waterbirds through regular ecological surveys and fishpond monitoring.

To promote the cultural and ecological value of local fishponds to the public through collaboration with fishpond operators and the community.
