Image Reinforcement: Rehabilitation of Lai Chi Wo "Pailou's",the Gateways to the Village, and the Placemaking of the Space Around

Proponent: HakkaHome-LCW Limited
Site: Lai Chi Wo

Project Description

Lai Chi Wo area is rich in cultural heritage and ecological resources. It is one of the most intact and established "Hakka village" in Hong Kong. Following the opening of Sha Tau Kok, and enhancement of regular Kaito services to and from the outer islands, lots of tourists are attracted to visit Lai Chi Wo. However, some of the communal facilities in Lai Chi Wo village are in a dilapidated state, such as the traditional tiled-roof and grey-brick Pailou structures at the east and west gates, which not only affect the image of the village, but also pose unnecessary safety risks to the public.

This project aims to upgrade and restore the key facilities in Lai Chi Wo village including the Pailou structures at the east and west gates and the old well, as well as upgrading the communal facilities, including the provision of recreation open space and landscape areas. Upon project completion, the overall image and carrying capacity of Lai Chi Wo could be enhanced, contributing to the goal of sustainable eco-tourism in the area.

Project Outcome

The upgrading and restoration of the Pailou structures at the east and west gates as well as the old well were completed. In order to preserve the traditional architectural features, the construction works adopted traditional Hakka architectural techniques while incorporating modern techniques to enhance the structural performance. The restored Pailou structures and the old well not only demonstrate traditional Hakka architectural techniques but also feature improved safety and structural integrity. People from different sectors have recognised the success of the restoration works. In addition, this project has enhanced the communal space by adding recreational facilities near Pailous, providing an enjoyable experience for visitors.

Moreover, during the project period, the project organisation had regularly organised workshops and guided tours to introduce the history, culture and construction techniques of the restored structures. This educational initiative has helped raise public awareness and appreciation for the local Hakka heritage.
