The history of the old wells

There are two old wells in Lai Chi Wo Village, one of which is located at the corner of the lane (i.e. the sloping road next to the hollow tree). In the past, villagers needed to go to the nearest water well to fetch water for cooking, bathing and cleaning. When fetching water, villagers need to remove the wire mesh on the water well and use a hemp rope to hang the bucket down to fetch water. During the process, villagers must carefully control the amount of water in the bucket to avoid falling into the well due to the heavy bucket. To avoid making multiple trips back and forth, most families have a water tank next to the stove to store water.

In the 1950s, the villagers built a reservoir on the mountain and applied for plumbing materials to lay water pipes. Every household began to have drinking water supply and no longer needed to fetch water from the water wells. Despite the above, the two old wells have been preserved till today and still have water in it.
