Micro-renewal of Architectural Landscape for Ruin Gardens: Re-habitation of Tree-House Courtyards and Revitalisation of Communal Spaces for Lo Wai in Kuk Po Village

Proponent: Centre for Chinese Architecture and Urbanism, HKUrban Lab, Faculty of Architecture of The University of Hong Kong
Site: Kuk Po

Project Description

After the lifting of Great Clearance during the reign of Kangxi Emperor in Qing Dynasty, the Hakkas began to move into Kuk Po village, and Lo Wai was the oldest settlement. Due to social changes, Lo Wai is now mostly abandoned and is off the beaten track.

The project therefore aims to improve the environment of Lo Wai, by transforming the abandoned century-old village house into an open space and neighborhood garden that displays the courtyard house layout, construction materials and craftsmanship of the traditional Hakka village house. It will also become a point of interest to draw visitors to Lo Wai, which will in turn expand the tourism network and promote the eco-tourism in Kuk Po.
