A Catalyst Project for Kuk Po Village: Restoration of Architecture and Built-Environment for the Annex Block of Kai Choi School

Project Description

Kai Choi School and its annex block were once the cultural and educational center of Kuk Po and the nearby villages. The school once had a maximum of 120 students. Kai Choi School and its annex block are important carriers of campus life and cultural memories for Kuk Po villagers. Also, the annex block are located at the entrance of Kuk Po Village and are located within the only way for tourists hiking from Luk Keng to Kuk Po. It is important node in the development of Kuk Po tourism network.

Through this project, the annex block has been restored and revitalized into a visitor and community center. On one hand, it attracted villagers to revisit the countryside and recall school life. On the other, the project will also beautify the surrounding environment of the annex school of Kai Choi School and provide a gathering place for tourists and villagers at the starting point of their visit to Kuk Po. It also allows tourists to communicate directly with villagers to enhance the tourism experience.

• Take green minibus No. 56K from Fanling MTR Station to Luk Keng, then hike for about 45 minutes to Kuk Po

• Reference Route: Luk Keng → Kai Kuk Shue Ha → Fung Hang → Kuk Po

Project Update

The project was completed on 31 January 2025.

Project Outcome

In addition to the restoration of the annex block of the Kai Choi School and the entry plaza, the project also held a number of seminars and guided tours, attracting numerous villagers revisiting the Kuk Po village.

Restoration design of the Kai Choi Annex Block
The project team created an animation for the restoration to review the design and facilitate the communication with the villagers.
Plaque Restoration
Before the restoration work, the Annex Block was dilapidated and the name plaque of the school was collapsed. The project team carefully searched for the fragments of the plaque in the village and reinstated it in the entry plaza. The sign has now become the highlight of the plaza.
