Natural Honey of Sam A Village
Modern beekeeping values not only economic output but also the ecological importance of bees as pollinators. The beekeeping practice in Sam A carries on a village-wide tradition—every household once kept bees—preserving a craft and flavour passed down for over a century.
According to village elders, in the 1970s, before residents moved away, every home hung beehives made from bamboo baskets reinforced with cement at their doorsteps. Honey was as common as rice, firewood, oil, and salt—an everyday staple of village life.
Today, the apiary sits within a fruit orchard, sheltered from the wind and warmed by the sun. Longan, lychee, mango, and other fruit trees provide the bees with abundant and diverse nectar sources. The hive entrances face southeast—not only avoiding the strong northeast monsoon, but also keeping them out of the harsh late-afternoon sun, reducing the chance of bees flying off.
