Agriculture in Sha Lo Tung

More than three hundred years ago, people had already settled in Sha Lo Tung, utilising the geographical advantages to create terraced fields and cultivate rice, while also growing a variety of crops. This led to the gradual development of a thriving agricultural village, bustling with activity, and the surrounding natural environment became vibrant and ecologically rich as agriculture flourished.

The project organisation collaborated with local villagers to restore farmlands and promote organic farming, encouraging the indigenous residents to cultivate the land, while also diversifying the habitats in Sha Lo Tung and enhancing its overall ecology. The local villagers established a social enterprise, Sha Lo Tung Green Fields, which not only involved villagers but also recruited volunteers to jointly serve as “farm friends.” The farmland covered approximately one hectare and was cultivated using eco-friendly organic methods, ensuring that the farming process did not impact the nearby rivers or local ecosystems.
