Ap Chau
Ap Chau is an island inhabited because of geopolitics and religion. Until 1920s, Ap Chau is still uninhabited, but with abundant fishing resources in Double Haven and Mirs Bay locating nearby, it attracted staging fishing vessels and the number continued to increase after WWII.
The Sha Tau Kok True Jesus Church had to be relocated with changing regime and rising tension after 1949, since many of the Church's followers were boat people from Double Haven and Mirs Bay, the Church was then relocated to Ap Chau, a wooden church was built with limited resources. The relocation attracted more boat people to settle around Ap Chau.
Starting from 1950s, the colonial government, Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe, the True Jesus Church and Ap Chau villagers built the fishermen village, providing water supply facilities, the Fishermen's Children Primary School and a new chapel, to improve the quality of life of the fishermen. From the 1960s, Ap Chau villagers, like other villagers in the New Territories, started moving to urban area of Hong Kong or emigrated for better living gradually.
Ap Chau was included in the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark: Northeast New Territories Sedimentray Rock Region in 2011, Ap Chau Story Room was then built at the former Fishermen's Children Primary School, to showcase fishermen stories of the old times. The Church chapel nearby still hosts regular worship sessions.
In some old maps, Ap Chau was labelled as "Robinson Island", it was named after the book "Robinson Crusoe" because it was uninhabited.
