Participatory Action Research (PAR) on Countryside Conservation and Revitalisation at Mui Tsz Lam, Hing Chun Yeuk

Project Description

Through a “Participatory Action Research” approach, the project organised a series of in-depth cultural experience activities to explore the past of Mui Tsz Lam from artefacts and seasonal celebrations, and thereby achieved the following five main purposes: (1) record and reshape the life and culture of the Hakka community in Mui Tsz Lam and nearby areas; (2) community empowerment; (3) assist the village to establish support and communication platform; (4) public education and (5) develop innovative cultural experience tourism products and activities. The activities organised include oral history research, development of sustainable cultural activities, exhibition on the Hakka living culture in Mui Tsz Lam, etc. It has provided a discussion on the importance and uniqueness of rural landscape heritage of Mui Tsz Lam and solutions to the challenges faced by the village revitalisation.

1 | Ma Liu Shui Kaito Ferry + Hiking |

• Take Kaito Ferry to Lai Chi Wo, then hike for about half an hour to Mui Tsz Lam

• Every Saturday, Sunday, and Public Holidays

• Departure: Ma Liu Shui No.3 Pier at 09:00

• Return: Lai Chi Wo Pier at 15:30

2 | Tai Shui Hang Kaito Ferry + Hiking |

• Take Kaito Ferry to Lai Chi Wo, then hike for about half an hour to Mui Tsz Lam

• Every Tuesday and Thursday (excluding Public Holidays)

• Departure: Tai Shui Hang at 09:00

• Return: Lai Chi Wo Pier at 15:40

3 | Sha Tau Kok Kaito Ferry + Hiking |

• Closed Area permit needed

• Take Kaito Ferry to Lai Chi Wo, then hike for about half an hour to Mui Tsz Lam

• Daily (No service on Tuesday (except Public Holidays))

• Departure: Sha Tau Kok Pier at 08:30、10:30、12:30、15:15

• Return: Lai Chi Wo Pier at 09:00、11:30、13:00、16:15

4 | Minibus + Hiking |

• Take green minibus No. 20R from Tai Po Market MTR Station to Wu Kau Tang, then hike for about 2 hours to Mui Tsz Lam

• Reference Route: Wu Kau Tang → A Ma Wat → Fan Shui Au → Mui Tsz Lam

The project has been completed.

Project Outcome

  • Using Mui Tsz Lam village as the focal "point", documented and reimagined the "lines" and "surfaces" of the Hakka community's lifestyle and culture in the area. Published the book "The Story of Mui Tsz Lam – A Journal of Rural Cultural Conservation" and the booklet "Cultural Map of Mui Tsz Lam" to guide visitors in appreciating and learning about Mui Tsz Lam, and contributed to the development of the cultural identity of Mui Tsz Lam in the long term.

  • Organised a series of activities, including the capacity building workshops and in-depth cultural experiences, to empower the community and enable stakeholders both within and outside the village to appreciate the ecological and cultural resources in Mui Tsz Lam, broadening stakeholders' and the public's imagination on countryside conservation.

  • Organised in-depth cultural activities, covering topics on Hakka wine and masonry, to create unique community-based and experiential activities, and promoted the development of innovative and in-depth cultural experience tourism products.

  • Recruited a core group of volunteers for Mui Tsz Lam to establish a long-term community-operated cultural sustainability project, and empowered them to become the driving force for promoting long-term cultural sustainability within the community.

The Story of Mui Tsz Lam – Part 1
In this first episode of the documentary, villagers shared their sentiments towards their hometown, while volunteers tried to put into practice environmental protection and cultural conservation. Policy initiative brought these two aspects together, unfolding a new chapter in the narrative of countryside conservation in Hong Kong's story.
