Project Description

This project consists of two phases, which focus on habitat management to conserve birds, amphibians, and landscapes with rural characteristics in the Ho Sheung Heung area, as well as to promote nature conservation. The project also enhances public awareness of local agriculture, wetland conservation, and farmland ecology through various educational activities, thereby conveying the message of "Harmony between Humans and Birds."

Management Measure

• Shallow Water Habitat: Water level control and open water habitat management
• Paddy Rice Field: rice cultivation
• Less Intensive Wet Agricultural Land: Planting Water lily, Lotus, Water Bamboo, Canna, Chinese Arrowhead and Water Chestnut, without the need for intensive manual management
• Intensive Agricultural Land: Traditional method of vegetable and fruit production requiring labour-intensive management. The project promotes planting at field edges without pesticides and fertilisers, use of environmentally-friendly pest control methods, and increased use of compost.
• Feng Shui Woodland: Tree caring and monitoring
• Species monitoring
• Sustainable eco-agriculture produce promotion
• Eco-tours, night safari, agricultural workshops, exhibitions and annual sensory nature activities
• School participation projects and community conservation projects

Project Update

(25/2/2024) Ho Sheung Heung MA project was invited to set up promotion booth at the New Territories Fishpond Carnival to introduce the project's conservation work to the public.

Project Outcome

Provide an important roosting and feeding site for about 40% of Hong Kong's bird species, mainly wetland and farmland bird species, many of which are rare or endangered.

Provide a stable habitat for about 40% of Hong Kong's amphibian species.

Raise public awareness to local agriculture, wetland conservation, and farmland ecology, and promote the message of 'harmony between nature and people'.
