Hong Kong Fishpond Conservation Scheme (2025-2027)
Project Description
Since 2012, the Hong Kong Fishpond Conservation Scheme has been closely collaborating with local fishpond operators in the Deep Bay area to carry out habitat management, public education, scientific research, and fisheries promotion. This current project marks the eighth phase of the programme, which focuses on three main areas:
1. Habitat Management: Encouraging fishpond operators to implement habitat management measures in their commercial fish ponds, including drain-down, profiling, restocking fish fry, and reporting on the waterbird nests. This aims to provide stable foraging and resting habitat for water birds.
2. Research and Baseline Surveys: Conducting ecological baseline surveys to monitor the conditions in the fishponds, gaining indepth insights into the conditions and circumstances under which birds utilise the fishpond habitats. A new ecological perch study has been initiated to collect more data on bird usage of the ponds.
3. Community and Public Engagement: Promoting local fishpond culture and ecological value to the public through diverse educational activities in collaboration with fishpond operators and the community, while also generating income for the fishermen and the community.
