
Fishpond Management Agreement Scheme in Mai Po, Tai Sang Wai and Lut Chau
Project Description
The project integrates proactive fishpond habitat management, scientific monitoring and research, and public participation, in partnership with fishpond operators from Mai Po, Tai Sang Wai, and Lut Chau in the Deep Bay Area, to conserve local fishpond ecology and culture and promote local fisheries.
Objectives:
1. Partner with fishpond operators and encourage commercial fishpond drain-down to create feeding and roosting grounds for waterbirds.
2. Develop habitat management measures for enhancing ecological value of fishponds.
3. Conduct ecological surveys to monitor the ecological condition of fishponds to provide information on waterbird populations and their habitats for sustainable habitat management.
4. Partner with fishpond operators to promote local fishpond culture and ecological value to the public.
5. Enhance public awareness and participation in wetland conservation.

Project Update
The project organisation organised the “Fishpond Festival” on February 8 2026, in Tai Sang Wai and Lut Chau fishponds. Over 400 citizens participated, showcasing their support for local fishpond operators and fishpond conservation. The event featured a variety of activities, including guided tours, handcraft workshops, game booths on fishpond and ecology, stalls selling local fishery products and traditional snacks making workshops. Participants had the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about local fishpond farming techniques and wisdom, and explore the fishponds and its ecology in a relaxed and enjoyable way.
