Project Plum Grove: The Construction Methodology of Rammed Earth Wall

As per the project organisation's research, steps in constructing the rammed earth wall are:

1. Construction of stone wall footing

2. Pre-construction works
Step 1: Drying of soil until sand-sized
Step 2: Crushing of stone
Step 3: Mixing of soil and gravel
Step 4: Sitting of mixture

3. Construction process:
Step 1: Construction of formwork
Step 2: Adding the mixture, water and other locally available suitable materials
Step 3: Ramming
Step 4: Drying

The experimental construction of rammed earth wall in Mui Tsz Lam commenced in November 2021. Despite the lack of relevant experience, the project team, with the assistance from the Hong Kong Institute of Construction and the volunteers alongside with the experience gained and lesson learnt during the process, managed to complete a sample wall of 1.8m (L) x 0.3m (W) x 0.6m (H) in January 2022.
