Project Plum Grove: Reviving Rammed Earth Construction - Test on Mui Tsz Lam's Soil
High quality soil is crucial for the construction of sturdy and robust rammed earth wall structure. In particular, the mix of silt, clay, sand and gravel should be at a specific proportion in order to achieve the required strength in the material. The project team conducted the soil test for 2 samples in Mui Tsz Lam, namely the soil from the Old House and that from hill side. Testing results reveal that, the soil sample from the Old House contains relatively less silt which stabilize the water absorbing quality in the wall structure and thereby more effective in the prevention of cracks, and is more suitable for construction given it contains no organic matter.
