Lai Chi Wo Eco-Smart Public Toilet
To cope with the increasing number of visitors to Lai Chi Wo, Countryside Conservation Office, in collaboration with Architectural Services Department, Food and Hygiene Environment Department and Electrical and Mechanical Services Department has delivered the Lai Chi Wo Eco-Smart Public Toilet. This project not only aims to support eco-tourism by increasing the tourism capacity of Lai Chi Wo but also to promote the image of countryside by smart and green architecture.
Lai Chi Wo Eco-Smart Public Toilet incorporates various smart ideas in its design, construction and operation, and strives to achieve the Advancing Net Zero Standards as defined by World Green Building Council, i.e.:
(a) 40% reduction in embodied carbon emission during construction stage; and
(b) 100% offset in carbon emission during operational stage,
in answer to the call for the carbon neutrality target outlined in the Hong Kong Climate Action Plan 2050. Through this pilot project, Countryside Conservation Office aims to enhance the general impression towards the remote countryside and support eco-tourism, thus responding to the community's vision for urban-rural symbiosis.
The toilet was completed in November 2023, and it was honoured with:
1) President's Special Prize, &
2) Special Award –Sustainable Architecture by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects
recognizing its achievements & contributions in green architecture in 2024.
You are most welcome to use this toilet during your visit to Lai Chi Wo, and provide us with feedback to enable the continuous improvement of the public facilities in countryside areas.
