Village Representative Tsang Yuk-on and the "Friends of Mui Tsz Lam" Group

In 2017, the village representative of Mui Tsz Lam, Tsang Yuk-on, invited volunteers to plant mandarin and tangerine trees throughout the village. These fruit trees symbolised the former prosperity of Mui Tsz Lam while also serving a practical purpose. Noticing that the village fields were constantly overrun with weeds, he thought that rather than spending money every year hiring labourers to clear them, it would be better to plant fruit trees. The harvested funds could then cover the cost of chartering boats on weekends to bring volunteers in to tend the trees. This approach not only managed the overgrowth but also allowed volunteers to engage with nature and contribute their skills.

Therefore, the "Friends of Mui Tsz Lam" WhatsApp group became a key platform for coordinating boats and work schedules. It also served as a virtual space for villagers and volunteers to socialise, discuss, and share experiences. Over the years, as conservation projects funded under the rural preservation scheme were established in Mui Tsz Lam—such as setting up campsites, restoring village houses, and publishing books—the WhatsApp group, created several years ago, remains active and vibrant to this day.
