The Colourful Ancient Well and the Lo Wu Brick Company
There is an ancient well in Fu Tei Au Tsuen that may have a close connection with the Lo Wu Brick Company.
According to villagers, the Company once mined and made bricks in the village, which were then used for the construction of the Kowloon-Canton Railway. The factory applied twice to the government for additional land within the village to expand its scale. Although the Company ceased operations in 1935 due to the economic depression which was later dismantled, many red bricks with the "KCR" mark are still preserved in the village today.
Many workers temporarily moved to the village during the time when factory was in operation and even dug a well of some 5 metres deep with layers of local gravel and stones to meet the drinking and cooking needs. At the beginning, the well opening was decorated with carved granite with one bearing the inscription "Lo Wu Company". Later, villagers replaced the materials with concrete to prevent rainwater and litter from washing into the well.
The Colourful Ancient Well has a profound connection with the Lo Wu Brick Factory, and the restoration of the areas surrounding the well was one of the key tasks. The project organisation strove to beautify the areas around the well, widen the outer wall, and added a balustrade to enable visitors to appreciate the structure. The project aims to better preserve the ancient well while also allowing more people to understand the story behind it, with sustaining its historical and cultural significance to Fu Tei Au Tsuen.
