Project Plum Grove II: The transformation of the Old House
Believed to be the first house built in Mui Tsz Lam, the Old House holds a long-standing history. Recently, the Old House was abandoned and became overgrown with weeds as the villagers gradually moved out to the downtown areas since the 1970s.
Thanks to the Project Plum Grove initiatives, the once-derelict Old House was given new life. The restoration of Old House, on one hand, retained the authenticity of the village house by using locally available materials; on the other, it introduced green building features, such as photo-voltaic panels for harvesting renewable energy and a rainwater harvesting system, to reduce resource consumption during operation.
Upon completion of the restoration works, the Old House was transformed into a Village Community Hub that displays Hakka settlement and village culture. It also promotes and supports the conservation and revitalisation of Mui Tsz Lam and the surrounding areas.
