Internet of Things Empowers Wetland Management Team in Coping with Extreme Weather
The "Smart Wetland" project's wireless Internet of Things (IoT) sensor network enhances the efficiency of wetland management in the Mai Po Nature Reserve, while also helping the Reserve's management team to get prepared for extreme weather events in advance.
Before Super Typhoon Ragasa struck Hong Kong, the management team utilised real-time data from IoT water level sensors, combined with tidal changes in the Inner Deep Bay, to swiftly and effectively lower water levels of the reserve's gei wai and freshwater ponds in advance. This allowed these semi-artificial wetlands to better perform their ecological function as "natural sponges", strengthening regional climate resilience.
