Forest Village Campsite
"Every visit to Mui Tsz Lam is always hurried; before I even get a chance to understand the village, I have to leave to catch the ferry!" is the general comment commonly shared among the project volunteers or visitors from afar before end 2023.
In fact, Mui Tsz Lam's mixed forest and village habitats are surrounded by dense fung shui woods and secondary forests, with streams running through the village. This environment attracts a wide variety of wildlife and holds rich potential for eco-tourism. Therefore, the Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme sponsored Centre for Civil Society and Governance at the University of Hong Kong to restore abandoned farmland, improve habitats, and creatively reuse the countryside resources in Mui Tsz Lam. These efforts aim to enhance the local ecology, inject new energy into the area, and ultimately achieve the goal of sustainable village living.
Among all, the abandoned terrace farmland was transformed as "Forest Village Campsite", bringing diversified and innovative activities to the countryside areas, allowing the general public to explore its unique charm throughout day and night, and unleashing new possibilities for the village. Nestled in a scenic valley and flanked by the areas for agroforestry, the campsite is Hong Kong's first to integrate ecological conservation, village revitalisation and forest experiences, enhancing the village's biodiversity.
The campsite's design centres on the sustainable concepts of Øscape, co-designed over several months by stakeholders in the society who are keen to contribute to sustainable rural revitalisation. The project team revived the site by preserving, restoring and repurposing existing local resources - sourcing materials locally wherever possible and preserving every tree and the traces of past agricultural activities.
The creation of campsite was made possible thanks to the dedication of passionate volunteers. The establishment of 13 camping decks and the construction of each handcrafted forest trail were accomplished through countless hours of hard work and sweat.
The campsite is open from September to May each year, mainly accepting group bookings with a minimum of 15 people per night. A variety of experiential activities are offered. Please email [email protected] for more information.
