Explore History of The Epiphany of Our Lord Chapel
The Epiphany of Our Lord Chapel holds signfiicant historical, architectural, religious, social and regional value for the commmunity of Sham Chung and the Catholic missionariy history in Hong Kong.
In the late 19th century, missionaries arrived in Sham Chung and established the Epiphany of Our Lord Chapel in one of the Wais, which was later known to the villagers as "Kau Tong Wai", making it the only Hakka village in the New Territories to be naemd after the Catholic church.
The chapel is named after the Festival of the Epiphany, celebrated annually on 6th January, symboilsing the manifestation of Jesus Christ to the world. On this day, the project team and Sham Chung villagers gathered together outside the Epiphany of Our Lord Chapel for a meaningful celebration and Mass.
Beyond its religious value, the missionaries in Sham Chung not only tended to the spiritual needs of the villagers, but also operated the school inside the chapel, offering the village children with education opportunities. The Chinese characters of "Catholic Church" and "Kung Man School" are inscribed on the gable wall of the chapel's front elevation, directly reflecting the multifaceted social significance of the chapel.
