Ecological values of Sha Lo Tung

Sha Lo Tung is ecologically valuable and is home to a variety of rare species including dragonflies, butterflies, fireflies, freshwater fish, amphibians and birds. More than 80 species of dragonflies have been recorded there, representing over 60% of all dragonfly species in Hong Kong. Sha Lo Tung has become an "insect paradise" as their breeding and nursery ground. Heliogomphus retroflexus, designated as Class II in the List of State Key Protected Wild Animals, the endangered Gomphidia kelloggi and the vulnerable Macromia katae were active in the management area.

In addition, Sha Lo Tung has a unique terrain by being surrounded by mountains. When rain falls onto the peaks in the south and to the top of Cloudy Hill in the west, the rainwater gathered at the peaks flow into Sha Lo Tung. After reaching the local area, several major tributaries are formed, making Sha Lo Tung rich in fresh water resources.
