Conducive habitat for butterfly breeding
Butterfly larvae generally have a fixed host plant (i.e. the plant in which the butterfly larvae feed on) and their habitat is not far from the host plant. For example, in places where the Common Birdwing (Troides helena) and the Common Rose (Pachilopta aristolochiae) are found, its host plant, India birthwort, should also be nearby. By planting a variety of nectar source plants to provide nectar for different species of adult butterflies for food, the project organisation has created a conducive habitat for butterfly breeding, which has increased the number of butterfly species in Fung Yuen from 192 in 2008 to 222 in July 2024, accounting for about 90% of the total butterfly species in Hong Kong.
