Building a modern Yeuk

Traditionally many of the Yan Chau Tong villages came together through membership pacts to generate regional benefits and enhance their capacitty for action. In the early 19th century, the Hing Chun Yeuk was created for seven of the villages, including Kop Tong, Lai Chi Wo, Mui Tsz Lam, Ngua Shi Wu, Sam A, Siu Tan, and So Lo Pun, to manage collective resources and protect themselves from external threats. The concept of modern Yeuk is to strengthen the connection between the villages through the rehabilitation of the Yeuk institution and built upon the strong foundation of distinct village identities.

The project has envisioned a modern alliance between the villages made possible through the rehabilitation of the Yeuk institution. It has strengthened the connection between the villages while supporting each village’s pursuit of its own development path. Once a certain level of revitalisation was attained, greater regional cooperation could help to enhance benefits and create opportunities for larger-scale revitalisation.
