Ah Bo the Buffalo, Vegetation Manager of Mai Po

Buffalo has always been a great partner to the habitat management team of Mai Po Nature Reserve, assisting in vegetation management. Buffaloes feed on grass and aquatic plants, effectively controlling their height, thereby creating an open wetland habitat that attracts waterbirds.

Buffalo tracking is one of the project highlight under the "Smart Wetland" Project. The Internet of Things (IoT) tracking sensor on Buffalo Ah Bo provides the habitat management team with the latest location of the buffalo. By combining grazing pattern data collected from sensors and data from ecological surveys such as vegetation and bird count surveys, the effectiveness of buffalo grazing in vegetation management can be monitored.
