Mai Po Nature Reserve
Well known as Hong Kong’s "Bird Paradise", Mai Po Nature Reserve is an important habitat for migratory birds such as Garganey and Tufted Duck. Every year, up to 60,000 waterbirds visit the Mai Po Nature Reserve over the winter, forming a spectacular scene. Since 1995, Mai Po and Inner Deep Bay wetlands have been recognised as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention.
Mai Po Nature Reserve also plays a vital role in the conservation of species other than birds, like the Eurasian Otter. On the verge of local extinction, otters can only be found in Mai Po and its nearby wetlands in Hong Kong.
Through active management, Mai Po Nature Reserve maintains a high diversity of wetland habitats for its targeted conservation species, including gei wai, mangroves, intertidal mudflats, freshwater ponds, and reedbeds, to provide diverse habitats for a host of wildlife, and conserve and promote local biodiversity.
