Event Introduction

To celebrate National Ecology Day on August 15, the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society is pleased to present the online lecture:

"In Search of Migrating Wings: Decoding Pond Fish Aquaculture and Wetland Bird"

Every autumn and winter, migratory birds travel thousands of kilometres from their distant breeding grounds to Hong Kong. They stop by the Inner Deep Bay area. These wetlands serve not only as vital resting stations along their long migration journey but also as bountiful feeding grounds which they need to survive the winter.

Hong Kong's fishponds are not only rich in biodiversity but also a feeding gound where migratory birds and local fishpond operators coexist in harmony. Although the local freshwater fishing industry is facing unprecedented challenges, our dedicated fishpond operators continue to maintain traditional aquaculture practices, sustaining the wetlands.

This online lecture will introduce the traditional operations and ecological value of Hong Kong's freshwater fish aquaculture, as well as the close relationship between fishpond and birds. We aim to raise more recognitions for the value of Hong Kong's fishpond.
