The Vibrant History of Kuk Po Pier and Kai Choi School
Kuk Po was once the second largest village in Sha Tau Kok, with the population of 500 residents. Its prime location, just across the sea from Sha Tau Kok Market, made Kuk Po Pier a vital trading spot. The village's well-connected land routes also added to its significance. Historians have highlighted the ancient trail linking Kuk Po and Wu Kau Tang, as "the most important road in northeast New Territories," establishing a unique commercial hub. The project team collaborated with an illustrator to recreate the vibrant scenes of Kuk Po Pier 's bustling scenery.
The project team connected with the former Principal of Kai Choi School and ten alumni to revive the school's 90-year history. Founded in 1932, Kai Choi School was a landmark in Kuk Po, funded by local and overseas villagers to educate their children. Initially, the school used Hakka dialect and included agricultural knowledge in its curriculum, later adopted the local education system. Alumni fondly recalled playing tug-of-war and skipping rope in front of Hip Tin Temple, creating cherished childhood memories. To the public, Kai Choi may seem like just a village school, but to Kuk Po villagers, it is a place of enlightenment and childhood joy.
